Summer School (1987) - A slight twist on the 80's high school comedy

I admit I've seen this movie quite a few times already, including in the theater when it actually came out. I wanted my daughter to try it and see if it holds up for the next (next-next?) generation.

She liked it a lot. WHEW.

Directed by the legendary Carl Reiner, it takes place in a Venice California high school. The laid-back gym teacher, played by Mark Harmon, is about to getting tenure, but to do that he has to teach summer school to the most uninterested students ever made. Hyjinxs ensue as he has to do whatever it takes to get them to pass their final grade.

There is no nudity, just a few swear words, but there is unique spark to this movie that separates it from B-level status. The cast is incredible and diverse, making sure they cover every bit of the high school walks of life. Harmon surprises as the apathetic Mr. Shoop, nailing the easygoing, aloof, ex-surfer burnout to a tee. A young Kirstie Alley and Courtney Thorne Smith shine as well. The SoCal vibe is almost a character in itself, with tons of shots of the beach and surrounding area front and center in the story.

Is it art? No. Is it Oscar material? Naw. But is it a fun little film with some laughs and unique characters? You bet.

A random stranger's opinion: Worth a rental for the 80s hair and attire alone, but also for a lot of genuine laughs.

Grade: B
