The Dirt (2019) - Bad with a Few HIts, Just Like Motley Crue

I was never much of an 80's hair rock fan. I dug AC/DC, The Cult, even a little Guns N' Roses, but not those bands that were more about image and tights than actual music. I saw there was this little movie about Motley Crue and thought I'd figure out if they had any substance that would warrant making an actual film about them.

Well, except for a few bumps, it's exactly what I expected. The same old sex, drugs, and rock n' roll.

It goes through how the band was formed in Los Angeles, how they grew a following, got laid, got into drugs and money, then slowly watched it crash and burn. Vince kills another musician in a drunk-driving accident, Mars has a debilitating physical condition, Nikki overdoses on heroin, and Tommy was just a total moron. They break up and get back together. Roll credits.

Now, I wasn't expecting something award-winning, but I was expecting a little more competent acting and writing, all of which were one-note. Whenever the actors were to stretch out of their comfort zone, they either couldn't do it or the script gave them too little to work with. There were a couple scenes that kind of worked, including the car crash and some of the concert shots. It's just not enough. It feels like a TV movie from the 80s, ironically.

A random stranger's opinion - I guess if you're a fan of the band or hair-band era you might get a kick out of the nostalgia, but even then it wears thin real quick. Kickstart My Heart is still a great song, though!
